Free Surf Art Show and Concert this Sunday!!

Hey guys,
I sure hope you scored some waves from the last few pulses of swell. Just added to the Surf Club schedule is an event that I REALLY REALLY hope you all can make it out to, since it took a lot of work to put together. We are having a concert and surf art show this Sunday night, January 25th, from 5:30-8:30pm, at The Loft on campus. I rounded up artwork from several talented surf artists around the area to put on display for us to enjoy. With appetizers to munch on, beautiful surf-inspired artwork to admire, and live music to groove to, this night will be a blast!

You can take the Bus #30 from several spots on campus to get down to the beach (go to Gilman Parking Structure or http://www.sdmts.com/Bus/Bus.asp for more info on bus routes and schedules).

This is a great way to meet other surf clubbers and come check us out!

See you at the beach,

Surf Movie Night, Thursday Jan. 15

What's up everyone,
We're going to have a surf movie night this Thursday night, January 15th, at the Surf Club House. The house is located at the far southwest corner of la jolla: 5238 la jolla blvd., la jolla, ca 92037. We'll be showing a movie made by ...Lost, either The Decline or 5′5″ x 19 1/4″ REDUX. The event will run from 8:15-11:15. Surf Club will provide some refreshments, but feel free to bring your own or anything else that might make your night a bit more joyous. If you don't have a car, the bus 30 runs right by the house. It picks up at many convenient spots around campus and also throughout PB. Get off at La jolla blvd. and Sea Ridge and head south, or at the West End Bar and walk north-we're on the ocean side of the road. Get off your asses and come hang out with your fellow surf clubbers!

Alex "A.I." Israel

Donovan Frankenreiter show/wavehouse?

DONOVAN FRANKENREITER: Professional surfer/musician/funnyman Donovan Frankenreiter is playing a show at UCSD on Wednesday, February 11 at 8pm. We will meet at Round Table Pizza in Price Center for dinner at 6:30 before the show. Bring $5 for pizza and Surf Club will cover the rest. I think it would be a good night to rep the club by rockin our Surf Club shirts. Buy tickets NOW at the Price Center Box Office as they will most likely sell out! Only $10 with UCSD ID. Here's a brief summary of Donny's style:
"Mellow grooves and acoustic guitar riffs characterize the surf-inspired sounds of Donavon Frankenreiter. A professional surfer, the harmonies of beach culture infuses his music and his first album, co-produced by friend Jack Johnson. With his slow funk tunes and happy-go-lucky attitude towards life, Frankenreiter's music feels like someone has translated the warmth of California sunshine into a refreshing soulful melody."

WAVEHOUSE: Shoot me an email to let me know if you'd be interested in going to the Wavehouse to try your luck on the stationary tube. The Wavehouse is usually EXTREMELY expensive (like $50-60 per person), but the Surf Club can get 40% off any weekday session after 6pm. It will still cost members $18 a piece and the club will cover the rest. We were thinking that a good week would be Week 5 (Feb. 2-5) so let us know which weeknight(s) work for you: ucsdsurfclub@gmail.com

Week 10 Surf Session at Blacks

Hey Everyone,
Hope you're not getting too stressed out with finals coming up. This week's surf session will be Friday morning. We will meet at the gate at Blacks at 7:10 and walk down at 7:15. Unfortunately, with large surf predicted all week, I'm going to have to advise beginners not to come out to this session, unless you just want to ride the whitewater on the inside. As for the experienced surfers, conditions Friday morning should be picture perfect: head high to a couple feet overhead, offshore winds, medium-low tide. Should be epic, and it will be my first Blacks session since my knee injury two months ago!! Hope to see you there!

Also, if you're looking for a little study break tonight, the Ski and Snowboard Team is showing a snowboard flick called The Massive at Price Center Theatre at 8:30. They'll be having a raffle and will be giving away lots of cool stuff. Realistically, the movie probably won't start til around 8:45. Sponsors include Red Bull, FuelTV, and Mammoth Mountain.

Give it your best the next week and a half and winter break will be so much sweeter,
Alex Israel

San Onofre Surf Trip!!

Hey Surf Clubbers,
This Saturday we are heading up to San O for a mini surf trip. An
historical Southern California surf break (the Beach Boys used to sing
about it in the 60's), San Onofre is described as "a beginner's
paradise of gentle breaking waves, long sandy beaches and an absence
of ego." It is about 45 minutes up the coast. Check out this link
for a full description:
http://www.surfline.com/surf-report/san-onofre-southern-california_4237/travel/

9:Fish is letting us borrow 3-4 boards to test out (first come first
serve), but other than that no equipment will be provided. As always,
wetsuits and boards can be rented at Muir Surf n Skate.

Here's the details:
Carpools will be leaving both from the Surf Club House and from the
Sungod parking lot on campus. We will meet up at both locations at
8:30am, pack up and then leave by 9:00. Yeah it's early for a
Saturday, but you'll be able to take a nap on the beach if you're
gonna bitch about it. The trip is free and open to members only.
Sandwiches, water, and fruit will be provided for lunch, and gas will
be paid for. We'll also bring frisbees and a football for more
entertainment. We'll be coming home mid-afternoon, so you'll be home
before dark.
SPACE IS LIMITED!! Therefore, YOU MUST RSVP ASAP by giving us your
name, phone number, and location to be picked up (campus or surf club
house).
Let me know if you've got any questions, or if you want to help out by
driving. More drivers=more participants=more fun!!
